Mechanical Engineering-What is It? / What Mechanical Engineers do?

Mechanical engineers design and develop everything you think of as a machine – from supersonic fighter jets to bicycles to toasters. And they influence the design of other products as well – shoes, light bulbs and even doors. Many mechanical engineers specialize in areas such as manufacturing, robotics, automotive/transportation and air conditioning. Others cross over into other disciplines, working on everything from artificial organs to the expanding field of nanotechnology. And some use their mechanical engineering degree as preparation for the practice of medicine and law. The mechanical engineer may design a component, a machine, a system or a process. Mechanical engineers will analyze their design using the principles of motion, energy, and force to insure the product functions safely, efficiently, reliably, and can be manufactured at a competitive cost.

Mechanical engineers  work in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, computer, communication, paper, and power generation  industries. Mechanical engineers will be found in virtually any manufacturing industry. Increasingly, mechanical engineers are needed in the environmental and bio-medical fields. Indeed virtually every product or service in modern life has probably been touched in some way by a mechanical engineer.

Design and Dynamic Systems Area

Current research activity is in engineering acoustics and noise control, NVH, vibrations and modal analysis, system modeling and identification, control systems, system dynamics, computer simulation of material-forming processes, off-line programming of robots, automobile crashworthiness, computer-aided strain analysis, software sensor development, optimal control of automated manufacturing, application of artificial intelligence in interactive design software, environmentally conscious design, and design of orthotic devices for gait rehabilitation.

Energy Thermo-Fluids Area

Emphasizes thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. Current research activity is in combustion processes, internal combustion engines, transmissions, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, and emissions and air quality control.

Manufacturing/Industrial Area

The manufacturing systems engineering program emphasizes the integration of design, materials, computers, and manufacturing with an exposure to business and engineering administration, and is particularly suitable for those who have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, metallurgical, or chemical engineering.

Solid Mechanics Area

What is the Mechanical Engineer?


Mechanical engineering is a broad field of engineering that involves the use of physical principles for analysis, design, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical systems. Traditionally, it has been the branch of engineering that through the application of physical principles has enabled the creation of useful devices, as tools and machines.

Mechanical engineers use principles such as heat, force and the conservation of mass and energy to analyze static and dynamic physical systems, helping to design objects. Mechanical Engineering is the branch of machinery, equipment and facilities bearing in mind ecological and economic aspects for the benefit of society. To do their job, mechanical engineering analyze needs, formulate and solve technical problems through an interdisciplinary, and relies on scientific developments, translating into elements, machines, equipment and facilities to provide adequate service through the rational use and efficient use of available resources.

Engineering is dedicated to designing, building, negotiation and component maintenance. It required new devices with complex functions in the movement or that withstand large forces, so it was necessary that this new discipline to study the movement and balance. It was also necessary to find a new way of running the machines as originally used by human or animal power. Pilot to Mechanical engineer-the story so far.

“What do you want to become when you grow up, a doctor or an engineer?” asked my grandpa when I was a four year old. A question that evolved from a typical malayali mindset. Most of the mallu kids are taught to reply either doctor or engineer if somebody asks. My answer was pilot. A couple of trips to Trivandrum airport and my favorite toy aeroplane might have struck the spark in me. The ‘pilot bug’ gradually died down as it was replaced by police,inspired by some action movies.

Quite ironically another movie which I saw when I was 7-8 years old, made me quit the desire to become a policeman. The movie was ‘Nanma niranjavan sreenivasan’ ( a Malayalam movie, Jayaram starrer). The hero of the movie was a police constable and in one particular incident the hero had to guard a deadbody, alone throughout a night. The next morning he was shivering with fever. That scene made an impact on my ‘weak heart’.

I fell in love with science @ school in 3rd or 4th standard. I dreamt of becoming a scientist . I stood odd in my class when teachers asked about ambition. The funniest part of ‘scientist story’ was that I did some experiments hoping serendipity.I still remember trying to burn various shrubs and grasses to discover biofuels when the hyped story of Ramar Pillai’s biopetrol was at its peak. Though I wanted to become a scientist, my mind wandered between astronomy, biology and geology.

I wrote the entrance exam for admission in Sainik school (9th std) and got shortlisted for the interview and medical checkup. To be frank I was more interested in the discipline , the sports and games and the huge campus, than becoming a defense personnel. The ‘scientist bug’ didn’t leave me. It was time for the interview and I had to strike a balance between ‘scientist’ and ‘defense personnel’. The interview panel consisted of three people, all of them defense staff. They shot the ‘ambition question’ and my answer was scientist in defense sector. They asked ” what do you mean ?” . I answered ” just like A.P.J Abdul Kalam”. Pokhran II and my interview happened in the same week and I went not stop about fission, fusion etc. They asked “what will you do if you don’t become a scientist?”. I replied ” I will join the defense services”. It didn’t convince them and finally I didn’t make it. They were interested in future soldiers, not scientists.

My grandpa’s question again came back when I finished 10th standard. This time from my parents. I changed my mind to engineer from scientist, but my parents wanted me to become a doctor( guess they were attracted by the social status and moreover my grandpa’s wish). I was in a reluctant mood , wrote the medical entrance and ended up in failure. After that I went for 1 year medical entrance coaching at a reputed coaching center . I neither gave 100% commitment to it nor dishearten my parents by saying a ‘no’ to the medical stream. I couldn’t get enough rank the second time also. The truth was that I often went in a ‘stealth mode’ practicing some maths problems which helped me fetch a fair rank in engineering entrance exam. Now there weren’t many options left other than joining bachelors degree course in engineering. I never blame my parents for the ‘lost’ 1 year, In fact I say I am responsible for the good or the bad that happen in my life.I should have taken a bold step. People (friends, relatives etc.) call it ‘lost’ year , but I never felt so and moreover learnt a couple of lessons in life.

Now it was time to choose the branch of engineering. The general trend was choosing electronics and communication . I was also in the mood until I got enlightened about Mechanical engineering by Dr. S. Jose , my relative and academic guru. Himself being a Mechanical engineer and Asst Professor, threw insight to the various aspects of mechanical engineering and I never thought twice to choose my stream. Mechanical engineering, being a ‘broad’ stream of engineering rendered me numerous options to choose- energy sector,oil and gas ,automobiles, aeronautical, aerospace,thermal.

I never had an interest in computer programming. I still remember, how tough the C++ programming was in 3rd semester for me, just managed to fetch a pass in that subject. 90% of the companies which came to my college for campus recruitment were IT companies. All the placement activities started in 7th semester. Though I wasn’t interested, just for the sake of attending tests and interviews, I participated in the drives. 3-4 companies came and I didn’t manage to get 1. Finally I got a job in a reputed IT company .I never wanted to join that company and told my intentions to parents. They advised it will be utter foolishness if I don’t join the IT firm, without having another job in hand. I was mentally preparing for a fight with them, thought of firing all guns to get a job in core field. I continued writing exams and attending interviews, and got a job in one of the fields which I dreamt of getting into- Oil & gas industry.My parents were happier than me. Thanks to all. Presently, striving hard to achieve my goals, and will be writing a part 2 to this post some years later. 🙂

A Mechanical Engineering Student’s Story

My engineering word starts when I was in standard one. During the time when I was small, I have totally don’t have any idea about what is the word “engineer” stands for, what is the job specification of engineers, how many division of engineering that exist in the world and so on. But, what had I put in my first ambition is – engineer. The childish thinking of mine does not drive me to explore more about engineering. However, the ambition keeps on changes as the years go by Engineer, Doctor, Painter, Musician, Architectural ….

My real engineering story starts when I won the third prize in the Physic Olympiad 2004. I have a well preparation work before I went to that competition. After the competition, I feel that my interest is actually lies on mathematics and physics. I am interested in exploring the knowledge of physics especially quantum physics, nuclear physics and material science. I have a good understanding on those modern physics theories by some of the famous sciencetist like Sir Elbert Einstein, Sir Arthur Holycomtum, Sir Neil Bohr and so on. These experiences drive me to take my form six study major in Physic.

This decision further enhances my bonding with physics when I found my good physics teacher – Mr. Teoh Paik Eng and Mr. Ooi Lin Chew. Both of them share the same characteristics – their passion towards physics study. I am totally “influence” by their passion. They make me fall in love with physics. With this interest and passion, I got a good result for the physics and mathematics in STPM. When the time I applying for the program of study in University, I face a contradiction. Should I choose pure physic or engineering study? After several tests on my ability and interest by the counselor, the engineering study is more suitable for me. Then, I start to choose the material engineering as my first choice in the list.

I was very fortune enough. I got my first choice and steps into University of Science Malaysia. I was very excited with this course because this is something that I want. My first lecture in my engineering life is “Introduction to Material Engineering”. I am really impressed with that method the lecturer lecture. She can explain everything about the material structures and have a well understanding on this field. Besides that, I am interested with the course “Engineering Mathematics” by one of the lecturer in EE School. At first, I felt bore and difficult with this course. The feeling was changed when I found the tutor. He is good in explaining the engineering mathematical problems and pulls me back from the boring status. I start to study hard in the courses for my first semester. At the end, I got a good result in my first engineering semester.

My ambition as a Material Engineers was changed when the story came to second semester. I am the kind of person who doesn’t like memorizing work. I like something calculation and hands on applications. I start to worry about my engineering life because I have to face lots of memorizing work for my four years of study. Therefore, I made researches on the other field of engineering and I found that Mechanical Engineering is suite me. I made a decision to change my program of study to Mechanical Engineering. With the result from 1st semester, I got the permission from the Registrar Department to change the program.

My first lecture in Mechanical engineering is “Thermodynamics”. The lecturer is good in explanation and expresses the knowledge to the students. At that moment, I was running in the right way. The actual engineering field for me is Mechanical Engineering. After the three years of study in Mechanical Engineering, I enjoy the study life. Besides that, study something interested makes me feel easy and satisfy with my achievement in this engineering field.

My first engineering experience starts when I had my internship in Bosch Rexroth. During the period of internship, I was given lots of project to handle. Of course I need the supervisor to check for my calculation and works. These are really a fantastic experience that I have not experience before. With the supervision from my manager and assistance manager, I have successfully design few hydraulic and pneumatic systems for the customers. The senses of satisfaction and achievements stronger the bond between me and mechanical engineering.

I am graduates soon. I hope that my life’s entire obstacles do not stop me from enrich my engineering experiences and knowledge. I plan to pursue my PhD degree in aircraft composite material after a few years of work. This is because I feel satisfy when I continue my Doctor Grades degree with some industrial experience.
I can express my engineering story in few words – because of enthusiasm, I love engineering.

And The Phrase” The Sun Is On…!” Hurts..!

It is the day that i have awaited more than My 20th B’day. Ofcourse i dint worked that hard to deserve anything!
TORQUE_ A Technical Orchid……..Quest for Excellence is the event that i have wauted for.!The last event in the year 2011 in UCE…!
Initial hiccups couldn’t deter the determined organizers from conducting the event.!With a modest support from the department and a meagre amount of Rs.20,000/- funds!
I still wonder how these guys had managed such an event to fare far better than other events in University!
The very first day saw many fresh faces in department…
Enormous inflow of new waters flooded into old still waters.
With a big question mak on my face i continued to wonder ” Will it be a success..?”
There isn’t even a single instant from which i could learn nothing right from the startig of inagural function to the last word of Thanks gving speech of Valedictory!
Its alwaz irritating to sit in an audi hearing to some blah blah…of eminent speakers with all doors either closed or guarded by some self proclaimed coordinators.!
Somehow they got crowd for that Inagural!
I have managed to escape to stalls.!
I was participating in every torque…
This is my 3rd Torque and 3rd time i have been in stall!
When i was in 1st yr we dint celebrated even though we got some profits….!!
But as the time gre my mind started transforming and i found that celebration of every possible ocassion will be the essence of Engineering life.!
3 different teams in 3 Torques!
Ofcourse i(We) have started celebrating in 2nd yr!
The cricket fever which was feared of was perfectly battled!
Achievable target and dogged performance from Men In Blue and of course some luck of Mr.Cool MSD could have costed us dearly.!
But thanks to performers who kept the audience to glue to their chairs.!
U happened to be computer operator for that day’s culturals ” ROCK ON”
Very close to stage!
I Torque-10 It was ” MY Love Is Gone”
And In Torque-11 It was MJ’s ” DANGEROUS”
Everyone is going crazy of MJ these days….
I feel that MJ fever is still on even though MJ Departed.!
And the thing i came to know
and which has adrenalized my thoughts of organising a whole college event is That JNTU is under transformation!
I’m in the university since 3 yrs…
But i haven’t spotted A Jr Anchoring an Event…
Thanks to all enthusiastic jrs….
I expect their cooperation for whole college Techno-Cultural Fest!
And the other thing is A Boy and Girl from same class dancing together on same stage…!!
A welcomed sign for a world class university!
And the good news came by air in the midst of celebration that Men In Blue had edged Kangaroo’s out of CWC-11
Thunderous applause to MIB rocked the Whole university campus…!
Finally the show halted at 1:00 am
for the next few hours i have slept and when i woke up i found the Sun is Just on….
Another day of surprises is waiting!

Mission Malfunction…!

sometimes i found happiness thinking of my redrawn strategies and changed gears!
Suddenly i will get involved in Holmsian thinking of philosophy(I used to call it so…Don’t care if othr ppl think something else…!!)all these happen just after getting my semester results..
What happened to me…?
What came over my typical brain which stood sensible during my intermediate ,3 years ago!
The ecstasy i have felt after excelling beyond my expectations ! I never knew then that it might be my swan song.!
As my performance in engineering is always far below my caliber!
Some turbulence which i had experienced during my 2-2 semester exams suddenly flashed before my eye balls.!
To be frank i’m at my wits end ..
In a desperate situation to strike back under any circumstances i have to strike back….
Get back to 70+
Tossing and turning emotions But all i knew that is i had to hold on…!
The support i’ve got from my fewest pals could be a good reason for my striking back.
Ofcourse for other ppl its nothing(71.2) But for me its something considerable thing of my life.!
I got that when i was a textaholic….
Atleast 400 sms’s daily i used to forward …
Every damn thing i received i used to forward.!
But there is some regular chat with two people whom i consider somewhat closer than others ..!
Its good to share experiences of studying ..
Hey I have selected these chapters what u gonna do chap….
can we find those chapters in that book..?
Was that book good enough..?
How many chapters u were going through..?
Ofcourse that was a silly thing…
But it builds some confidence..
Thanks to those two.!
But now every one had stopped texting…
even i had recovered from my textaholic state…!!
Only one who still text is Kittu only…
He remained same since 1st yr…!!
I have chosen this trade only to satisfy me endless love for machines..Still i’m infinite far from getting what i deserved..I have had the count of things that i dint had…
I was very impeccable at planning of course every one do..
and i was insane enough to fail at execution.!
And now there are no people to share them tooo.. 😦

Some times i feel like shouting ” A hell hound is outta thr to give u ppl a great hell..”
But the same thing of failing at execution scares me like anything….!
All i hope is that my life is busy in preparing something extra normal and large for me..
I ended up inn writing the same sentence as i always do…
And there is something hot on the board for this summer….
” Some one is about to get caught in a tarantula’s web called Love..
He may get sucked outta his life again….
Increased instances of pirated emotions made me to think so…””

Lets see what this summer got for me
A Huge Gift box or The Same Size Pandora’s Box…!!!
And i have started another mission for 3-2 exams…
