USE YOUR BOOZE AS YOUR FUTURE FUEL

biofuel-from-whiskyTill date, all types of alcoholic drinks, or booze as they are commonly called, are produced only with the intention of drinking for socializing, fun, recreation and to drown one’s sorrows.
However the researchers of Abertay’s School of Contemporary Science have found a different and more beneficial use for alcoholic drinks.

The researchers here have been awarded the prestigious Carnegie Trust Research Grant to help them in the investigation of turning the residues that are found in the production of beer and whisky, into a form of renewable biofuel.

This is anticipated to be a project that takes about a year to find new methods of turning the spent grain of these drinks into an efficient biofuel, bioethanol.

Bioethanol is a much more environmentally friendly alternative to the present fossil fuels you find around you.
The reason it is considered better to using bioethanol, instead of traditional fuels for your fueling purposes is that it is CO2 neutral. It is also produces 65% less greenhouse gas emissions because it burns at temperatures that are at a much better level for fire safety.

With the supply of fuel being predicted to be finite, with half of the world’s oil supply already having been consumed in the passed 200 years, scientists are looking for simple and cost effective means of producing more biofuels from low value and waste products. there is a race going on for finding environmentally friendly alternatives to fuels for the future of the world, and this is why spent grains of alcohol and beer manufacture are considered to be a safe and efficient option for this.

Today Brazil and USA together produce over 70% of global supplies through the creation of bioethanol from sugarcane and maize starch respectively.
Though the US has beaten Brazil in its production, Brazil is still the largest exporter that sends about 3.2 billion liters of bioethanol in the last year alone.

Like all things in life, there are some negative aspects to this method of generating fuels. Both these countries tend to create an increased demand for land to grow the energy crops they require for generating bioethanol. In fact, in countries like Brazil, the safety of tropical forests too is threatened where even the benefits of using biofuel too may be cancelled out.

This is why researchers are considering using the waste products received from the manufacture of alcohol for creating biofuels. This may be a more complicated process of turning waste products into bioethanol. However it is a perfect example of a second generation biofuel.

The products used for the creation of this biofuel is usually disposed of or at the most, used for processing animal feed.

Instead of this, using them to produce fuel would be an attractive means of using this resource. However presently, there are many technical challenges and hindrances that have to be overcome to help in converting waste biomass into fuel.

And the search is still on for a more efficient and cost effective process for producing biofuels from alcoholic wastes.

Mission Malfunction…!

sometimes i found happiness thinking of my redrawn strategies and changed gears!
Suddenly i will get involved in Holmsian thinking of philosophy(I used to call it so…Don’t care if othr ppl think something else…!!)all these happen just after getting my semester results..
What happened to me…?
What came over my typical brain which stood sensible during my intermediate ,3 years ago!
The ecstasy i have felt after excelling beyond my expectations ! I never knew then that it might be my swan song.!
As my performance in engineering is always far below my caliber!
Some turbulence which i had experienced during my 2-2 semester exams suddenly flashed before my eye balls.!
To be frank i’m at my wits end ..
In a desperate situation to strike back under any circumstances i have to strike back….
Get back to 70+
Tossing and turning emotions But all i knew that is i had to hold on…!
The support i’ve got from my fewest pals could be a good reason for my striking back.
Ofcourse for other ppl its nothing(71.2) But for me its something considerable thing of my life.!
I got that when i was a textaholic….
Atleast 400 sms’s daily i used to forward …
Every damn thing i received i used to forward.!
But there is some regular chat with two people whom i consider somewhat closer than others ..!
Its good to share experiences of studying ..
Hey I have selected these chapters what u gonna do chap….
can we find those chapters in that book..?
Was that book good enough..?
How many chapters u were going through..?
Ofcourse that was a silly thing…
But it builds some confidence..
Thanks to those two.!
But now every one had stopped texting…
even i had recovered from my textaholic state…!!
Only one who still text is Kittu only…
He remained same since 1st yr…!!
I have chosen this trade only to satisfy me endless love for machines..Still i’m infinite far from getting what i deserved..I have had the count of things that i dint had…
I was very impeccable at planning of course every one do..
and i was insane enough to fail at execution.!
And now there are no people to share them tooo.. 😦

Some times i feel like shouting ” A hell hound is outta thr to give u ppl a great hell..”
But the same thing of failing at execution scares me like anything….!
All i hope is that my life is busy in preparing something extra normal and large for me..
I ended up inn writing the same sentence as i always do…
“LET THE DESTINY TO PLAY ITS BELATED ROLE”
And there is something hot on the board for this summer….
” Some one is about to get caught in a tarantula’s web called Love..
He may get sucked outta his life again….
Increased instances of pirated emotions made me to think so…””

Emotional Asphyxiation And The Small Town Syndrome………!

It all started when i rushed towards her like a fly rushes towards a lamp..!

When i used to smoke my memory hush suddenly i happened to feel her intrusion..!
I never really knew den dis may have little importance in my experiment torn life.!
To much of experimenting with my life caused a severe disorderliness..!
Of course this disorderliness is not uncommon for me….
the happened like this…!!
Every time i felt like giving up writing these insane writings some body will just intrude and raises hopes of making it till the end…!!
When this girl came like an unexpected summer rain…
I welcomed it….
don’t know the reason but somehow my Detective ridden brain sensed foul play…!!
I found her reason rather accepting…!!
Morphed….
These were the feelins before few months…
And i came to accept The existence whole heartedly…!!
Everytime i think about someone i start my thinkin from my purposely wasted shoool daz..
When i used to be an introvert and every one used to call me a good boy and i was very much susceptible to the so called false emotions…
Well, That’s not the matter i really think about…
But it gives me some base for Lateral, philosophical thinking..!

It’s 12th august , A Friday ,The day suddenly i took the task of completing my tour memoirs..Don’t know why suddenly i took that thing…!!

I’ve tried so many times but without completion..!
I know i’m pretty good at taking initiations and taking first leap…
But hell is that i can’t live upto expectations when it comes to execution..!!
I do remember a person when i talk about the start of proceedings for Industrial tour..!!
That day
In December,2010… i think
I was seriously googling for some books (of course i don’t read’em…But i used to maintain a good collection of E-Books…!!)
I got a message on my Gtalk Gadget ” Do You know Civil people are booking their train tickets for their Industrial tour..!!”
oh is it…
okay lets c…
some one will take a forward leap in our class lets follow him(There is a reason for not including HER here…!!)…
after few days @ After Lunch Discussion
I had a discussion regarding this tour with Abbas ,Sasidhar,Mahendra…
Few people who got interest in arranging such type of events…
I’m fortunate have such a bunch of good organizers…
People like them took such tasks with huge responsibility…
and they are really good team players…!!
i really love working with them.!
There are people who bank upon the people behind curtain…
they don’t do much work but they do indulge in things at eleventh hour ..!!
These people should be appreciated when compared to those people who crack jokes on The Organizers…!!
at last after so many days we have finalized the places and dates
and the faculty ,permissions, Money etc…
But still there is one task to be completed ” making the total count to 40″
While trying to reach 40
we came across some Strange situations and some PECULIAR people…!
One said ” My grand pa is seriously ill”
can’t comment on such reasons…
the person’s been perfectly polite i(we) cudn’t question Honesty…!!
One couldn’t blame other people’s family responsibilities..!!

” I tried to call and convince my dad to permit me…
and the network people saying that it was wrong dialed…
Suddenly i remembered that I FORGOT MY DAD’S Phone Number..”
Dumbstruck at the very moment….
Thank god i’m still alive….
And this thing happened to our beloved XCr suddenly offered his helping hand and we were delighted…!!
I thought owing to cold war between us
they may remain as audience…
but no
they came forward…!!

I was cursed with the ability to guess intentions of people from their eyes….
Lips can lie while eyes can’t…
i cant guess exactly but i can suspect mismatch between words and expressions…!!
Anyway after so many Adventures and differentiations The tour started ..!!
I have had written till the PRASHATHI XPRESS dropeed us at B’lore-Yeshwanthpura Rail station @12 noon…!!
A Guy from the travel company came and received us ….Soon we packed our luggage, baggage into the luxury bus that had been arranged for us …!!

Failure Mode – A particular way in which an item fails, independent of the reason for failure.

 Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) – A procedure by which each credible failure mode of each item from a low indenture level to the highest is analyzed to determine the effects on the system and to classify each potential failure mode in accordance with the severity of its effect.

Indenture Levels – The hierarchy of hardware levels from the part to the component to the subsystem to the system, etc.

Redundancy – More than one independent means of performing a function.  There are different kinds of redundancy, including:
(1) Operational – Redundant items, all of which are energized during the operating cycle; includes load-sharing, wherein redundant items are connected in a manner such that upon failure of one item, the other will continue to perform the function.  It is not necessary to switch out the failed item or switch in the redundant one.

            (2) Standby – Items that are inoperative (have no power applied) until they are switched in upon failure of the primary item.

            (3) Like Redundancy – Identical items performing the same function.

            (4) Unlike Redundancy – Non identical items performing the same function

THE FMEA PROCESS

  • Define the system to be analyzed.  A complete system definition includes identification of internal and interface functions, expected performance at all indenture levels, system restraints, and failure definitions.  Also state systems and mission phases not analyzed giving rationale for the omissions.

  • Indicate the depth of the analysis by identifying the indenture level at which the analysis is begun.

  • Identify specific design requirements that are to be verified by the FMEA.

  • Define ground rules and assumptions on which the analysis is based.  Identify mission phases to be analyzed and the status of equipment during each mission phase.

  • Obtain or construct functional and reliability block diagrams indicating interrelationships of functional groups, system operation, independent data channels, and backup or workaround features of the system.

  • Identify failure modes, effects, failure detection and workaround features and other pertinent information on the worksheet.

  • Evaluate the severity of each failure effect in accordance with the prescribed severity categories.

The coatings and paint industries strive to provide high technology coatings while reducing volatile organic compounds and energy consumption to produce a finished coating. Conventionally Convection ovens are used to cure the coatings. But this process which uses electric heaters is not an optimal process and is associated with various disadvantages.

Improved technologies are available today, which can either replace or improve the convection curing process. Infrared Curing is such a technology which uses Infrared rays emitted by an Infrared emitter to provide the required cure. Infrared curing applies light energy to the part surface by direct transmission from an emitter. Some of the energy emitted will be reflected off the surface, some is absorbed into the polymer and some is transmitted into the substrate.

This direct transfer of energy creates an immediate reaction in the polymer and cross linking begins quickly once the surface is exposed to the emitter. Infrared emitters are often custom manufactured to suit the production demand. The various aspects of Infrared curing and convection curing and the possibility of combining these two technologies into a singe system will be discussed in this seminar.

How it Works

Infrared heating is a direct form of heating. The source of the heat (the infrared emitter or lamp) radiates: energy that is absorbed by the product directly from the emitter. That is, the heat energy is not transferred through an intermediate medium. This is one reason for  the  inherent high-energy efficiency of infrared systems. For  example, hot air heating  first needs to heat air; the air then heats the product by convection.

Infrared  energy is directed  to  the  product. When  the  product absorbs this energy, it is then converted into heat. Infrared energy is dispersed from the source in much the same  way as visible light. Exposed product surfaces easily absorb  the  infrared  energy and  become  heated. Therefore, heating effectiveness is related to line-of-sight between the source and the product. Depending on the coating and/or product substrate material, this heat is further thermally conducted.

The ability of the product to absorb energy is also known as its “emissivity”. A theoretical body that absorbs all energy is termed a “black body”. A black body has an emissivity of 1. A highly reflective body would have a low emissivity value, approaching 0. (Reflectivity is the inverse of emissivity).

The potential of a product to become heated with infrared is related to the following:
• Watt density (total output power) of the source
• Wavelength (temperature) of the source
• Distance from the source to the product
• Reflective characteristics of the oven cavity
• Air movement and temperature in the oven
• Time product is exposed to the source
• Ratio of exposed surface area to the mass of the product
• Specific heat of the product
• Emissivity of the product
• Thermal conductivity of the product

CURING

Curing is a process of baking surface coatings so as to dry them up quickly. Curing is a broad term which means all the techniques employed for the finishing operations incurred during part production. Curing essentially involves either the melting of the coating or evaporation of volatile fluids present in the coating by the application of heat energy.

Curing is given to a wide range of materials both organic and inorganic. Usually curing is given to materials like ,

” Paints
” Enamel
” Liquor
” Powder coatings
” Varnishes
” Epoxy coatings
” Acrylic coatings
” Primers Etc.

Curing is also given to Rubber and Latex .The principle used for curing can also be used for drying rice and grains.

CONVECTION CURING

Convection ovens are usually used for curing purposes. Traditional convection ovens use heated forced air to provide the necessary cure. Convection ovens consist of a chamber lined on the inside with Electric heaters. The shape of the chamber will be in accordance to the shape or geometry of the part being cured. A series of blowers circulate the heated air around providing the required cure. This process depends on convection to transfer heat from hot air to body surface and conduction to transfer heat to the interior of the surface. The air being delivered is held at temperature using closed-loop control, which provides predictable, repeatable results. Typically a temperature of around 250-500 degree Fahrenheit is required for paint or powder. Though convection ovens are widely used today they have certain disadvantages, which chokes the overall productivity of a company
Disadvantages of convection ovens :

” Fairly long heating times:-

Convection is a slow process. It takes a considerable amount of time for the heaters to heat up and raise the temperature of air to the required level. This causes a lag in the process and hence the curing time increases. Longer curing time spells reduced assembly line movement. This in turn reduces productivity.

” High energy consumption:-

A convection column dryer uses around 2000 BTU(British Thermal Unit) of energy to remove 1 pound of moisture. They use around 7.7 KW of electrical energy to dry a ton of rice. These are significantly larger figures for any company trying to bring energy consumption under control. The additional use of blowers and compressors further increases energy consumption.

” Large floor area required:-

Convection ovens are bulky in nature. Due to the presence of compressors and blowers, additional space is needed, which in turn increases the floor area requirement.

” Air circulation is required:-

Convection heating requires a medium for transmission of heat. Hence blowers are employed for good circulation of heated air. This increases the overall cost of the equipment.

CONVEYOR

Conveyor Take-up Arrangement:

All belt conveyors require the use of some form of take-up device for the following reasons:

  • To ensure adequate tension of the belt leaving the drive pulley so as to avoid any slippage of the belt
  • To ensure proper belt tension at the loading and other points along the conveyor
  • To compensate for changes in belt length due to elongation
  • To provide extra length of belt when necessary for splicing purpose.

Usually there are two types of take up arrangements.

  • Fixed take up device that may be adjusted periodically by manual operation
  • Automatic take up devices for constant load type

In a screw take up system the take up pulley rotates in two bearing blocks which may slide on stationery guide ways with the help of two screws. The tension is created by the two screws which are tightened and periodically adjusted with a spanner. It is preferable to use screws with trapezoidal thread t decrease the effort required to tighten the belt.

The main problem with the use of manual take-up is that it requires a vigilant and careful operator to observe when take up adjustment is required. Perfect tension adjustment with this system is also not possible. For this reason these devices are used only in case of short conveyors of up 60 m length and light duty.

In automatic take up arrangement the take up pulley is mounted on slides or on a trolley which is pulled backwards by means of a steel rope and deflecting pulleys. The carriage travels on guide ways mounted parallel to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor, i.e., horizontally in horizontal conveyors and at an incline in inclined conveyors. Hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical take up devices are also used.

Automatic take-up has the following features:

  • It is self adjusting and automatic
  • Greater take-up movement is possible.
